Bampton – General Style

Differs from Fieldtown in that movement is more in the "horizontal" with emphasis on 1st beat
(Fieldtown "vertical" and emphasis on 3rd beat) – Bampton is also "snappier" and a little faster.

Arms flow from solar plexus area up and forward on 1st beat, finishing lower and further forward than with Fieldtown – and also slightly open to the sides. The motion of the arms up is emphasized more than for Fieldtown (where the emphasis is more on when the arms are actually up and then their slow drift down). Arms return to solar plexus region on 2nd beat.

Standard stepping phrase is 6 singlesteps (start left) and a "show" (step onto left and then right, right
– effectively a subdued half caper) on beats 7 and 8. Arms go out-in-up-down for the show. Singlesteps 5 and 6 are often backsteps. No swaggering on backsteps!

Start the dance on beats 7 and 8 with the show.

Bampton sidestep features in heys and some choruses. Sidestep left = left-right-left-hop, sidestep right
= right-left-right-hop. Free leg kicks up behind. Singlestep arm movement is two-part - up and then a flick on the first beat (eg left arm flicks at the same time as left foot steps).

Half-Capers: Basically a spring from the left foot onto the right foot and hop. Arms out-in-up-down- out, with the up helping with the spring from left to right. Free leg trails behind.

Plain capers: Basically springing from one foot to the other eg 4 plain capers = left-right-left-right. Arms turn in small circles at side of body.

Bampton – Figures

Foot Up
o 4 singlesteps up the set, 2 singlesteps back and out, show facing partner.
o 4 singlesteps down the set (stepping in to the original set spacing with the first beat), 2
singlesteps back BUT NOT OUT, show facing partner.

Half Gyp
o 2 singlesteps across (right shoulders), 2 singlesteps on spot, 2 singlesteps back, show.
o Repeat passing left shoulder.

Whole Gyp
o 1st singlestep to face close with partner and then singlesteps 2-4 to circle one another
(clockwise), surge back to place with steps 5 & 6, show on beats 7 and 8.
o Repeat circling anti-clockwise.

o 4 singlesteps round circle (clockwise), steps 5 and 6 to turn out in a little circle (~1m diameter
– avoid travelling backwards on steps 5 and 6), show on beats 7 and 8.
o 4 singlesteps round circle (anti-clockwise), steps 5 and 6 to return to place in set, show on beats
7 and 8.
o Make sure the rounds are circular.

o Sequence is 2 sidesteps (normally start sidestep left) followed by 2 singlesteps and a show.
o Repeat for a whole hey.
